Thomaston was incorporated and designated as the seat of Upson County on June 11, 1825 . The town was named for General Jett Thomas, who fought in the War of 1812.
On March 5th, 1833 John Pettigrew bought land lots 11 and 21 for $150. from Thomas Beall. Pettigrew built the home on lot 11 as a one and half story home with a full attic.. The Greek Revival house was originally located in downtown Thomaston and is the second oldest home in the area. He sold both lots in 1836 to John J. Dodson for $1,500. Dodson sold the property on January 4th 1840 to Benjamin B. White.
Benjamin White lived in the home for the next 47 years and added 3 rooms to the house, an additional bedroom, a dining, kitchen, and a large verandah across the back. White was born on October 29th 1811 and passed away on November 25th 1887. He ran a tannery in Tan Yard Branch, now known as Town Branch. Like many tanners of his time, he also owned a boot and shoe store on the north side of the town square.
White was married three times. His first wife was Louisa Burton, who passed away in 1844. In 1846 he married Mary O. Richardson. They had 3 children, Thomas, Amos and Sallie. In 1854 Mary passed away. His last wife was Sarah Olive “Sallie” Stamps. They were married in 1867. In 1873 their detached kitchen caught on fire and burned down, not an unusual occurrence at the time. However, a few days later another fire was set and both fire were attributed to arson. When they rebuilt the kitchen the Stamps incorporated it into the main house. The fires motivated the town to start the Hook and Ladder Volunteer Fire Department in January 1874.
Sallie Stamps White outlived her husband by 36 years. When she passed away she willed her home to her sister, Mattie Stamps. In 1932 Martha and Britt Stamps, her niece and nephew, moved there to care for their aunt.
In 1967, the Citizens and Southern bank bought the property in order to expand the drive through service. They gave the home to the Upson Historical Society. The Historical Society moved the house to its current location. in 1971.
